On-line Trading of Rights-Enabled Learning Objects

Abstract: The trading of learning objects, with a specific focus on using rights information for e-commerce, is destined to provide the much-promised return-on-investment needs of the e-learning community. This paper proposes a rights-expression language for use in the e-commerce trading of learning materials and demonstrates it in a national project. The paper highlights the need for technology standards for learning object description, packaging, commerce, and digital rights management to enable the open and interoperable commerce of learning objects.
